The Poway 10U Diamonds of 2009 would like to welcome you to our home page.

Thanks to our parents, family and friends for supporting our team. You were always there to bless us with your voices, enthusiasm, and smiles.

Here's how our season went:

PQ Memorial Day Classic:  May 21-24
                                 Friday, May 22     Rancho Bernardo - 3     Poway Diamonds - 1
                           Saturday, May 23     Navajo - 3    Poway Diamonds - 2
                           Saturday, May 23     Bonita Valley - 3    Poway Diamonds - 1
                           Sunday, May 24     PQ - 5     Poway Diamonds - 0

                                         PQ Tournament Recap

The PQ tournament was our first of the season. Our girls were put in a tough pool...and even though the results were not what we hoped for, the experience that the kids gained against stiff competition was really valuable. They learned about perseverance, staying strong in tight games, and hopefully controlling emotions when things don't go quite right...and no, I'm not referring to the head coach :)
Our pitching was solid. In the 4 games we struck out 18 while walking only 8...allowed 6 hits and just 2 earned runs.
Our hitting was better than the scores would seem to indicate. We put 53 balls in play...although not enough were hit hard. Timely hits were what we lacked...stranding 25 baserunners in our 4 games. We also struck out 20 times...that needs to change...and it will.
The defense played well at times but had too many lapses, 16 errors :( ...that time and practice will cure. We're going to work hard in practice this week...and we're looking forward to PYL...Go Poway!

Placentia/Yorba Linda Tournament:  May 29-31
Saturday, May 30    Los Alamitos - 7     Poway Diamonds - 1
Saturday, May 30     La Mirada - 5     Poway Diamonds - 0
Sunday, May 31st     Bonita Valley - 3     Poway Diamonds - 2

PYL Tournament Recap

In the PYL tournament we got a chance to play some pretty solid L.A. and Orange County teams...which should help us in the long run. We also played a very tough 3-2 game against Bonita Valley, (the eventual tournament champion) where we led 2-0 in the 4th inning. We let that lead get away...but showed some tenacity and focus under duress. That effort definitely gave us a place from which we can build.
Saturday's games were a bit rough at times. We committed nine errors against Los Alamitos and four more against La Mirada that extended innings that should have been relatively quick, easy ones. Our hitting also remains a concern, although we did get our first home run against BV. We're putting the ball in play...but need to attack a bit more aggressively. We'll start finding some gaps as we continue to work at it.
In the game against Bonita Valley, our Diamonds made only one error while making some amazing defensive plays. The girls experienced a higher level of play that they're capable of...that they acheive regularly at practice.
With continued hard work...we're confident that this season will bring it's share of success.

Mira Mesa Tournament Recap

The girls in green had a really good tournament in Mira Mesa. With some much improved hitting and solid defense, our Diamonds won their first three pool games. On Sunday the team advanced to the semi-finals...only to lose a 1-0 heartbreaker against La Costa.
It was great for the kids to get some wins under their belts, while gaining some confidence. Our pitching remained a bright spot, allowing an average of less than 2 runs per game in the tournament.
Some of the girls got to play some new positions in this tournament, as well as four different pitchers that got some time in the circle.
We're looking forward to another good week of practice...then on to Irvine. Thanks so much for all your support. Go Poway!

                                                     Irvine Tournament Recap

Our 10U Diamonds made it to their 2nd semi-final in a row up in Irvine against some pretty good teams. Irvine marked the 3rd straight tournament where our team was eliminated by the eventual tournament champion...twice in the semi-finals, and once in the quarter-finals.
The girls are working hard and are showing some great improvement. After starting the season 0-7...our girls have achieved a 7-4 record since.
In Irvine the team showed signs of improved hitting while the defense was pretty strong for the most part. Our pitching continued to be a bright spot, although we ran into a great hitting team in Scripps Ranch that we have to tip our hats to. They won the championship game by a score of 10-2...by mercy rule.
We're looking forward to our home tournament this next weekend. Hopefully we'll see many of you in Poway at Aubrey Park.

                                                   Poway Summer Heat Tournament Recap

Let's hear it for our girls in green! We're all so proud of them for their performance in our home tournament. They earned a #1 seed in their pool...won two bracket games in convincing fashion...and earned a trip to the final game. In the finals we ran into a very strong Bonita Valley team, whose overpowering pitching ruled the day.
The girls are really progressing well. Before reaching the finals in Poway, the girls advanced to the semi-finals in their previous two tournaments...being ousted only by the eventual champion in their last four tournaments.
Our pitchers have remained tremendous...allowing only seven runs in six games in Poway...and only three up until the finals. Our bats have been coming alive as well. We had more extra base hits in Poway than in all of our tournaments yet combined. Our defense has been solid...and baserunning has been aggressive.
We are looking forward to the District tournament next weekend. Hopefully, two wins will put us into the state tournament in Lancaster. Maybe...we're beginning to peak at the right time??... Go Poway!

                                                               District Tournament Recap

Going into the weekend, our team knew that in order to qualify for the state tournament they needed to finish in the top four out of twelve teams in our district. Way to go girls...you did it! The team was able to reach the semi-finals, finish in the top four and advance to Lancaster for states!
Our girls pounded the ball, played great defense, pitched really well and have made all of us so proud. This team has come together, tried so hard, and is now seeing the fruits of their labors. It's so awesome to see them play as a team.
As the summer heat is beginning to kick in...we're so looking forward to our next few weeks together. The girls will be working, preparing, laughing and smiling as they get ready for states. We can't wait for our next chance to play together in Escondido...and beyond. Hope to see you soon. Go Poway!

                                      Escondido Tournament Recap

The girls in green were at it again in Escondido...preparing for the State tournament next weekend in Lancaster. We had a chance to play 3 games against teams that are expected to do very well at the State tournament...so it was a good opportunity for the kids to play some better teams.
Although the results were not exactly what we were hoping for...we played 'em tough for the most part. We learned about playing small ball effectively, what it can do to help your team be successful...and how to better defend small ball at the same time.
The girls had a couple of nice wins over Ramona and RB...so we were able to keep our local bragging rights intact!
We're very much looking forward to the State tournament. The competition will be stiff...a real test for us. I'm sure the girls will do their best to advance to Nationals.

                                   State Tournament Recap

Ah...so close! Our 10U Diamonds were a couple runs shy of qualifying for Nationals, against the team who won the State tournament. And to think that this team started out 0-7...it's an amazing testament to our kids, parents, fans and coaches. The State tournament proved to our girls that they belonged on the field with anyone...with a great, gutsy win over a solid Laguna Niguel team. Then came two one run, hard fought losses. Not only did they belong...they became a team to be reckoned with.
In the 10U final game at States, Charter Oak beat Hart to win the State tournament. We lost to Charter Oak 3-2 at States and lost to Hart 4-2 the week before in Escondido. We didn't realize until after States just how far these girls had come!
Unfortunately, Saturday's loss was a tough one. We held a late 4-1 lead. This was in spite of a base umpire who called a dozen illegal pitches on our starting pitcher, who'd never had it mentioned to her before in over 250 innings of All-Star and championship play. Both teams had to remove pitchers due to one overzealous umpire. Observers were shocked at what transpired. ASA is looking into it...I hope changes will follow.
However, our season was defined long before our final game. These girls showed heart, tremendous determination and effort. I'm so proud to have been able to coach these kids, and to have been associated with this team. It is one that I'll always remember.

Thanks so much to all of you who've supported us throughout the season. I've gotten so many awesome calls, texts, voice mails...giving the team and I much encouragement. Many of you followed this page during our season and cheered us on. On behalf of our kids, coaches, families and friends...I'd like to say thanks to all of you who were there for us. Many of you showed up out of no where for games. And although we were busy at the time...it brought a smile to our hearts to have you there. Every season is filled with ups, downs, laughter, sweat and some tears. I think we all walk away more enriched because of it all. Thanks again to all of you.

Thanks girls!! You've blessed our lives beyond what you know!

1, 2, 3...Go Poway!
